One more thing...

Don't forget to bring your tin whistles tomorrow.  We will be using them for the next 6 weeks (weeks 7-12).

Thanks!
Hi everyone,

Hope you have all been well over the last couple of weeks.  As you know, I was out last week (week 6).  I'm not sure if Stephanie said why, but I lost a very close friend on Monday night, so I was not in the best condition to teach.  As I'm grieving the loss of my friend, I found out on Friday that my aunt passed that morning.  Needless to say, this week has been a rough one for my family, friends, & myself.  I am still trying to decide if I should come tomorrow, so I probably won't make my decision until this evening.  I'm going to do my best, as I pray for strength & endurance.  So if you all would please keep us in your prayers, we would be very grateful.

Don't forget to bring your ice cream sheets tomorrow!  Also, presentation is "Show & Tell!"  The kids should bring something in a bag and be prepared to give clues, and the class will try to guess what is in the bag.

Thank you guys, and I hope to see you all tomorrow.

Week 4 Overview

I want to thank you all for being so patient with me in getting in the habit of posting a blog in a timely manner. :)

  • History: Timeline Cards #22-28, Seven Wonders of the Ancient World
  • Geography: Hittite Empire
  • English: Prepositions - before, behind, below, beneath, beside
  • Latin: 1st Declension Noun Endings
  • Math: Skip Counting 7's & 8's
  • Science: Some Parts of a Plant Cell

Our Science project was called "Oily Feathers", and in Fine Arts we learned about "Abstract Art".

GEOGRAPHY: The story we used for the Hittite Empire was - In ASIA MINOR, there was a TURKEY named HATTUSA/HATTI that wanted to take a trip to the ARABIAN DESERT, but settled for a vacation on the island of CYPRUS.

SCIENCE: The song was to the tune of the 4's skip counting. It goes like this:
Chloroplasts (4-8-12)
Cell Membrane (16-20)
Cell Wall (24)
Cytoplasm (28)
Nucleus (32)
Mitochondria (36-40)
Vacuole (44)
Golgi Bodies (48)
These are some parts of a plant cell (singing 4's is really great)

*The sheets we used did come from CC Connected, but Simone provided those, so I am not sure of the file name.  I would do a search for "plant cell".  Also, the name for the section file share is now called At Home Sharing Center

Presentation for week 5 is "Tell us your favorite joke.  You can use pictures or props."  Help them to work on Articulation this week.  They are doing so well...better & better every week!

See you on Tuesday! :)

Week 3 Recap!

Hey everyone!

I don't know about you guys, but I feel like week 3 was the best yet!!  Your kiddos are doing so well, and are getting more and more involved, and really LEARNING!  It's really exciting and rewarding to see. :)

Recap of Week 3:

  • History: Timeline cards #15-21, Greek & Roman Gods
  • Geography: Hebrew Empire
  • English: Prepositions - along, amid, among, around, at, atop
  • Latin: Noun Endings - 1st Declension
  • Math: Skip Counting 5's & 6's
  • Science: Some Parts of an Animal Cell
Our Science project was called "Blending" and in Fine Arts we learned about "Upside Down Images".

GEOGRAPHY: This is the story I used to go along with the Hebrew Empire - The lion of JUDAH lumbered slowly up through ISRAEL with JORDAN (R) the jaguar. Then they got thirsty and went back to get a drink in the DEAD SEA. “Too salty!” so they  used the PHOEN-ICIA to call the SEA  OF GALILEE to make sure it tasted better.

ENGLISH: We got the hand motions for the preposition song from a video on YouTube.  Just do a search for "Classical Conversations Preposition Song".  It should be the first one that shows up (not the first ad, the first actual search result).  It's a mom with 2 kids - one teenage girl, and a young boy standing in the grass.  Come to find out, I had been doing the motion for "about" wrong. ;) Sorry about that!

SCIENCE: We did a song for parts of an animal cell, and the file is on CC Connected.  They have renamed the section that used to be called File Share, and it is now called Classical Sharing Center.  Also if you haven't been on CC Connected today, they have updated their online tutorials!!  Yay!  Everything is up to date, and they have even added Timeline!  I'm really excited about that. :)

Ok back to science - the file is called "science c1 week3.mp3" by username haleyp, and no it's not me!  That actually caught me off-guard when I saw my name.  Haha.

Week 4 presentation is "Share a favorite bible verse."  Next week, I'm going to be paying close attention to volume - speaking with appropriate loudness so the audience can hear them (it's listed on the presentation schedule).

Again, review review review!  The date to bring in ice cream sheets is September 2nd (week 6)!  This is a really exciting day for the kids!  I made the mistake of forgetting Makenzie's sheet once last year, and she was devastated!  Needless to say, I went back & got the sheet from home. ;)  I'm not sure how it will be handled if they don't have their sheet...but to be on the safe side, don't forget it!

Thanks so much!

CC is Tomorrow!

Hi everyone!  I'm so excited for CC to be resuming!  I hope you have all recovered from Hurricane Issac.  I don't know the extent of each of your home damage, if any, but please know that I'm praying for each one of you, and also please let me know if there is anything you need, and I will do my best to help!

For presentation tomorrow, the topic is "Tell us about your family. - Share the names and ages of each member, where your family lives, your family's favorite activities, and anything else that makes your family unique. You may bring pictures of your family to show your audience."  Sorry it's so late in the evening!  Hopefully you all have a copy of the presentation schedule, and if you don't, please let me know.

We are going to be starting on Latin endings, and I found a really neat file on CC Connected.  It's printable flashcards to help with pronunciation.  It's by user NoGreaterJoy5 and there are 2 of them - 1 powerpoint file, and 1 pdf.  One is called - W3 and 4 Latin Noun Endings 1st Declension Flashca.pdf  and the other is W3 W4 Noun Ending Noun Ending 1st Declension Flashcards.ppt .  I will using them in class tomorrow.

Hope you all have a great night, and I'll see you in the morning!

Week 1 Notes & Welcome!!

Hi Foundations Parents!

I'm so excited about our 2012-2013 school year in Classical Conversations!  Our first week was amazing!  I am very proud of all of your students!  I definitely feel it was a success!  As the year goes by, they will get more and more comfortable and participate more willingly (from my experience with my daughter).

First, I'd like to give you all a little of my background.  My husband's name is Brandon Peterson.  He manages a marketing/sales team in New Orleans for a company called Monterey Marketing.  He is also a worship leader at our church, Vineyard of New Orleans, where I also teach a 4 year old children's church class.  I am also a discussion group leader for our MOPS group (Mothers of Pre-Schoolers) at Vineyard.  We have 2 children - Makenzie is 6, and Ethan will be 3 in December.  Makenzie is in her 3rd year of Foundations, and is involved in dance, art, guitar lessons, and will be starting piano lessons soon, and both Makenzie & Ethan will be starting swim lessons soon as well. We also have Buddy, our miniature dachshund, and Hermie, our hermit crab.  Needless to say, we are a busy family. :)

A majority of you were given a welcome letter on Tuesday, but for those of you who didn't receive it, or weren't in my class for week 1, please email me and I will make sure you get one.  I ask that everyone makes sure to read it thoroughly, as it is somewhat of an outline of what is expected of both students and parents during class time.  There are a few other things that the letter does not cover:
  • Since we only have 2 1/2 hours together, and it's a pretty fast paced class, having the parents help out is vital for the flow and enjoyment of our time together.  During our first 30 minutes of class, we have 7 subjects and only 4 minutes for each subject, so each week I will be asking a parent to time me using either my iPod or phone.  This will help us move through each subject smoothly.
  • One thing I did not cover in the letter is cell phone usage.  CC discourages the use of cell phones in class because it is a distraction to everyone - parents, students, & tutors.  If you have a call that you must take, please step out into the hall.  I understand we all have other family members/friends that will need something from time to time, or just contact us in general.  Just be mindful, and refer to the handbook for guidelines on the topic.
  • If you are interested in a copy of the presentation schedule, history sentence hand motions, & timeline hand motions, send me an email and I'll get that to you.  The timeline information is copyrighted, so in order to send those out, I need to see that you own the cards.  Just bring a card with you to class, and that will give me the "ok" to send you that information.
  • Most of you were asking where I found the songs & handouts for class on Tuesday.  A lot were from CC Connected.  If you haven't yet signed up, or you are still having trouble logging on, you can let either me or Simone know.  I believe it is $6 a month, and totally worth it.  There are hundreds of printables and songs at your disposal.  It's incredible.   If I use things from cc connected, I will post the file name here, to give you the opportunity to download it to use at home.

Ok, now I want to give a little recap of what we learned during week 1:

  • History: Timeline cards 1-7, Commandments 1-5
  • Geography: Fertile Crescent
  • English Grammar: Preposition definition
  • Latin: Noun Cases
  • Math: Skip Counting 1's & 2's
  • Science: Classification of Living Things
Our science project was called "Baby Bean", and in Fine Arts we studies the 5 basic shapes of drawing - OiLS.

SCIENCE:  The sentence was "KING PHYLLUM called CLASS to ORDER so the FAMILY GENiUS could learn the SPECIES."  I also found a really neat file on CC Connected that you can print and let them put the classifications in order, and it also has that sentence that they put in order as well.  It's called CC_C1-W1_Class_LivingThings.pdf.  We will use it at some point during the next 5 weeks for Review.

Next week's presentation is "Tell us your favorite short story."  Please have your students practice presenting their short story to you a few times between now and Tuesday.  It makes a world of difference when they are prepared.  The story should be roughly 2 minutes.

Don't forget to review 3x through the week and let your students color in a spot for each time you review!  Reviewing is extremely important...especially if any of you are going to go for memory master!  You'll be surprised at what these little ones are capable of retaining!

Thanks so much for reading!  Let me know if you have any questions.  See you next week! :)
